Introduction
Snowy Owl (Bubo scandiacus) is a large white owl from typical owl family tree. They are native to the Arctic regions of North America and Eurasia. The snowy owl is a ground nester that primarily hunts rodents and waterfowl, and opportunistically eats carrions. Where most owls are nocturnal, this particular species are diurnal and especially active during summertime where the breeding season begins. During migration in Winter season, the juveniles are normally ahead of the adults and the youngs are gradually pushed further South.
I am co-leading snowy owl tour at Ontario, Canada beginning of 2019 for 5 days, where the average temperature varies from -5c to -15c and the readings exclude wind factor.
When photographing these birds, we ensure that the distance between us and birds are at comfortable distance. They are normally found by roadside, perched on the posts or on the flat land. Bear in mind it is a challenge to spot the birds in an open field with at least 10 inches of snow! Photographing in the winter with white snow everywhere, your auto exposure meter will be thinking these are bright lights and wanted to under exposed the scene. It is suggested to use the +1 or +2 EV compensation on your camera or if you are in Manual mode, ensure the exposure meter on the viewfinder or back LCD are showing at around +1 or +2 towards the right side.
